History of Candles

History of Candles

In Wicca and related forms of Paganism, the candle is frequently used on the altar to represent the presence of the God and Goddess, and in the four corners of a ritual circle to represent the presence of the four classical elementsFire, Earth, Air, and Water. When used in this manner, lighting and extinguishing the candle marks the opening and closing of the ritual. The candle is also frequently used for magical meditative purposes. Altar candles are traditionally thick tall candles or long tapers which are available in many colors. In Wicca, the candles that are used come in a variety of colors, depending on the nature of the ritual or custom at hand. Some Wiccans may use red, green, blue, yellow and white or purple candles to represent the elements.

Using candles in magic based on Wiccan beliefs is known as "sympathetic magick" in that it is believed the candle represents the outcome the person is wanting. It is a "like attracts like" form of magical practice. For example, if a person is looking for a job or needs extra income a green candle (the color of American dollars) would be used. For romance, a red candle would be used (red is a universal color of love and hearts). There is an additional belief that the smoke from the candles will take the prayer requests, desires, or wishes up to the gods.

How to use candles:

general guide

Each candle you use for divination should have its own specific purpose. For example, you should have one candle for when you read for others and another candle for when you read for yourself. Make sure to use a different candle for the sole purpose of making wishes or, perhaps, one for placing at your dinner table. Each candle should have its own function. Don't, for example, use your dinner candle for divination. When you are about to do a reading, be sure that you are the one lighting the divination candle; after you are done, make sure you snuff it out.

Choose a candle of one solid color, because colors vibrate at different frequencies and are used for tapping into different energies. Here is a list of the colors and their applications in prayer and divination:

White: The chameleon colour associated with the moon and is a little bit of all colours of the spectrum mixed. Used fo rpurity, truth cleansing and healing as well as divination. A good all-rounder.

Red: Linked to the Planet Mars. Denotes passion and adventure and high energy. This is for a quick burst of energy for lust, health, drive and determination. Not used for divination.

Yellow or Gold: The Sun colour that shines on creativity and inspiration. Used for persuasion and influence on career, health and people.

Pink: The romance candle links with Venus for friendship and romance, discover real intentions of people. A good candle for wishes and divination.

Purple: The Psychics favourite colour is used infrequently as it takes a lot of energy to work effectively. Spiritual enhancement and abilities, ambition. Swings the balance of karma in your favour for a while. In divination only the most important spiritual questions should be asked.

Black: Saturn's candle used for cleansing when used with white also balances emotions and bad energy. Removes sorrow and pain. Rarely used for divination.

Orange: Mercury close to the sun burns away tension and bad moods when used on the person. For prayer it brings good luck in writing, business deals, and strengthening friendships and bonds between people.

Green: The Heart Candle. Harmony, peace and good health especially fertility and luck in finances. Used for divination and prayer for families health and financial questions.

Blue: The big planets Jupiter and Neptune enhance meditation and relaxation for people. Brings soothing calm and peace. Higher wisdom and truth is sought in divination through candle meditation when blue is present.

Brown: Nature and earth candle used for meditation and for connecting to self. Not used for divination.

Candle Divination:

The basics:

Give the candle its own space. Make sure it's not surrounded by clutter and a mass of other objects. You'll want to give the candle some of your own vibrations. You can also rub the candle with some essential oil. Hold the candle in your left hand. Rub the candle from bottom to top and then down to the bottom again. Close your eyes and smile. Let your mind wander. Feel positive and think about your goals. Visualize success.

Now, hold the candle in the center with your right hand. Put it down. Light it (it's best to use a match, but a lighter will do). Then say: “Please give me strength, guidance, and wisdom. Thank you.” Close your eyes and say a short prayer of thanks to whomever you're asking for help. Open your eyes. You're ready.

Single candles can be used for simple prayer.

Watch how it burns over several hours. Make notes. Often one side burns faster than the other. If the right side burns faster than the left the answer is YES and left side faster means NO. Right side burning faster indicates good fortune. Left side faster means ill-fortune.

Multi candles give you extra clarity and guidance for example.

2 candles gives you one for YES and one for NO. The first to burn out is your answer.

3 candles

Placed in a triangle. If one is burning more brightly than others this indicates luck. Flames that sputter and even go out indicate negative influences and resistance. Circular motion means someone is actively working against what you want. If all burn evenly, steadily, undisturbed and consistently then nothing will change.

A strong flame is a good sign your prayers are being answered.

A weak flame shows heavy opposition to your desire.

A jumping flame shows arguments and emotions are at work.

There other ways to do candle work but these are the most simple.

Good Ideas:
