Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural oils to enhance psychological and physical well-being.

While there is a lack of scientific information evidence does exist that essential oils have therapeutic potential as the association of smell and taste works to stimulate positive and negative senses in our minds.

We recoil at certain smells and react positively with others.

Essential oils  combined with essences of flowers and plants provide a sensory experience that alters our mood and heightens our sense of well-being.

There are a number of ways to create these oils but the science is less important for most people compared to the benefits perceived.

Perfumes, scents, inhalers and oils work in different ways according to purpose.

Aerial diffusion: for environmental fragrances or aerial disinfection.

Direct inhalation: for respiratory disinfection, decongestion, expectorants as well as psychological effects.

Topical applications: for general massage, bathing, compresses, therapeutic skin care.

Aromatherapy can also be used for the treatment or prevention of disease by use of essential oils.

Other uses include pain and anxiety reduction, enhancement of energy and short-term memory, relaxation, hair loss prevention, and reduction of eczema-induced itching.

Two basic mechanisms are offered to explain the purported effects.

1.The influence of aroma on the brain, especially the limbic system through the olfactory system.

2.The direct pharmacological effects of the essential oils.

The most common use of essential oils is for massage and for bathing followed by mood enhancement.

There are many different types of oils and some of them and their uses are listed below.

  • Lemon oil is used as an  anti-depressant.
  • Thyme oil
  • Peppermint Lemon oil and basil are often used to re-energize the mind.
  • Lavender and Tea tree Oil are used as antiseptics, sometimes in lotions or soaps.
  • Lavender oil is said to help heal wounds and burns.
  • Lavender, Jasmine, Chamomile and Peppermint are used for anti-stress, anti-anxiety and as an anti-depressant
  • Sage Oil has been suggested to boost short-term memory performance in many using it as a dietary supplement
  • Rose for anxiety
  • Sandalwood for anxiety
  • Frankincense for prayer

Essential oils have positive effects on every level of being. Their unique properties enhance the mind, body and spirit. Aromatherapy is the creative and (somewhat) scientific application of essential oils to create beneficial changes in our lives on aesthetic, therapeutic and mystical levels.
