Emotional Spring Cleaning
Emotional Spring Cleaning
When our emotional health is in a bad state, so is our level of self-esteem. We have to slow down and deal with what is troubling us, so that we can enjoy the simple joy of being happy and at peace with ourselves.” Jess C. Scott
Do you struggle to contain your feelings? and are you getting angry and upset over the little things when you wouldn't normally let these effect you.
Are you overwhelmed emotionally? and finding yourself tearing up unexpectedly during the day and becoming overly emotional.
Find it difficult to sleep at night? Or at all? Lying there tired but unable to sleep normally as the time slowly passes until dawn.
When do you have time for yourself? We are all surrounded by the challenges of daily life and people. Making time for ourselves is hard some days.
So every now and then you just have to sit down and take out the (emotional) trash by Spring Cleaning internally. Release the emotions, drain away the strains and stresses that build up. Not just a simple cleansing but a full on Spring Clean.
This is easier said than done but is essential if we are going to recharge our batteries.
How can we relax and remove from our thoughts what we feel? We are not designed to do that. Our hearts are governed by our emotions and feelings.
It’s not only the holistic practitioners that recognize the importance of a healthy mind. Conventional western medicine affirms that health and disease are not only related to the chemical condition of the cells, but also a person’s state of mind.
Research has shown that the cells that carry emotions to the brain are also present in the immune system and impact the nervous and endocrine system. Therefore, what we think and feel has a profound impact on our health. This is why a positive mental attitude is especially important.
“People who seek psychotherapy for psychological, behavioral or relationship problems tend to experience a wide range of bodily complaints...The body can express emotional issues a person may have difficulty processing consciously...I believe that the vast majority of people don't recognize what their bodies are really telling them. The way I see it, our emotions are music and our bodies are instruments that play the discordant tunes. But if we don't know how to read music, we just think the instrument is defective.” Charlette Mikulka
We are purposely built so we can feel and act accordingly.
“It isn't stress that makes us fall - it's how we respond to stressful events.” Wayde Goodall
But what if we are slaves to our emotions? What if our responses are out of sync with our reality? What then?
"We are dangerous when we are not conscious of our responsibility for how we behave, think, and feel." —Marshall B. Rosenberg
Simple steps are needed to reduce and finally to remove emotional trash that is holding us back from moving forward with our lives.
Take a step back when you want to spring forward.
Here are some simple steps to emotional spring cleaning (in no particular order)
Cleansing - Take a sea salt or long hot soak in the Tub. Works wonders!
Clear your mind - Try some meditation.
Go for a quiet walk – peace and quiet is very calming and relaxing.
YOGA - will help to reduce and control your emotions.
Make a list of the concerns or issues you are experiencing trouble with.
Releasing – allow yourself to cry and release the emotions.
Fresh Start – Create a new theme or approach to each day.
Diet and Exercise - Start a new diet and exercise regime. Its incredibly cathartic to work off your stress.
Do one thing at a time. Don't let it all get to you at once.
SLEEP. Rest and relaxation is incredibly important.
Ask for help. You will be amazed at how much help is there for you.
Clean House. Literally! Remove old photos or keepsakes that keep you in the past and allow your future to be in the present.
Responsibility - take responsibility for the past don't cast blame on others.
Break Free - Avoid repeating the same mistakes and patterns of behavior.
Be Ruthless - Prioritize and purge your schedules and routines.
Cleanse your spirit and allow positive emotions to enter your heart.
“It is the mind’s job to protect and
take care of you, to solve your problems and make sure you’re safe.
So, if you feel a surge of emotional upset, it moves into action,
trying to help, looking for the source of the upset—for the
problems—and generating solutions.
Under these conditions,
the key to getting the mind to go on standby—to stilling the mind’s
compulsive thinking—lies in recognizing, accepting, and working
with the emotional upset. Once you address the emotional
undercurrent, once it is no longer churning inside you, the mind can
switch off and quite literally leave you in peace.”
